About Sandy Utah

Sandy grew up at the base of the Wasatch Mountains as a processing center for the ore mined in the mountains. A number of smelters were built, but only the Mingo lasted. The first trains came into town in 1871, and with ore coming down from the mountains, the small town of Sandy quickly boomed. In its early years, Sandy had only one well, and every train hauled in drinking water. It sold for five cents a bucket. Demand for water was kept down by the town’s thriving saloons.

Some say the town was named for the quality of its soil. Others say it was named for Sandy Kinghorn, the engineer of the first locomotive that arrived in town on September 23, 1871. The station was known as Sandy’s Station for some time, and the name even appeared on early maps.

A number of ore smelters operated in Sandy before 1900, but the town’s smelting days are long forgotten. In the past two or three decades, Sandy has become of of Utah’s most densely populated suburbs.
